Almost there!

It is with delight - and no small sense of WHEW - that I say we finished the final mixing and mastering for Rising!
Picture
Dana White was amazing to work with in this final stage.  Many thanks to Sacha Müller for connecting us with Dana, and for coming along for that mastering session to answer questions about the mixing, be extra ears, and make suggestions.  We are thrilled with the results, and can't wait to share them with you!

Being done with the mastering means we have spent the last few days cleaning up the last of the non-musical details. Alex Atallah, our percussionist/graphic designer, has been hard at work on the CD cover art and layout, and we are all chiming in with final edits (that photo? no, that one), and I am doing the last checks on affiliations, getting licensing agreements signed, etc. so we can send the whole project to Oasis, who will  print the CDs.  It should take about a month to get them back to us, and then we'll ship them, and the other rewards, out to you!

Survey Coming

We will soon be sending out to you, via Kickstarter, a survey to ensure that we have all the info we need to send you the rewards you picked when you pledged your support.  Please keep an eye out for it and respond; we'd hate for you to not get your thank-yous!

CD Release Concerts

We have set up two shows to celebrate the CD release.  The first is Saturday, November 12th at 7:30pm at Kairos UCC in Milwaukie, OR.  The second (for anybody who can't make the first, and, hopefully for people who hear the first show and get excited enough to drag their friends along to the second) is Friday, December 2nd (probably an 8:00pm start) at Salt and Light Lutheran Church in NE Portland. We'll have info posted here soon.  We will also send reminders to the fan list, so if you want to be reminded and aren't already on that mailing list, you can sign up here.

Core Tracks Done!

6/19/2016

Hello friends and supporters,

The Rising recording process is rolling along. We've been in the studio twice since my last update, and have completed core tracks for all the the pieces on the album!

(For those of you are less familiar with recording processes, the core tracks are generally the rhythm section tracks along with one or more leads.  We lay those down first, since the studios we're using are not set up to let us record nine or more parts at once, and then overdub the rest of the parts, sometimes one by one, but more often in groups of two or three.)
Picture
We still have recording to do - we'll be in Sacha's small studio this Sunday doing the percussion overdubs, and have a largish handful of others to do after that - but we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

A bit about what we've been doing:

We brought some guests in to sing on the sections of Mouth Music that will be a larger group.  Here are the fabulous baritones, Rob Fishel, Jeff Waltz and Tom George.
Picture
The new fiddle tune set - a pair of originals by Shawn and Rachel called The Dusty Crow, and Francie and the Birds (and so called by all of us The Bird Set) - came together nicely, with some fun handing around of leads and Bryan generating idea after idea after idea for support parts on his various sized mandolins.
Picture
We got nearly everything recorded on our cover of the Decemberists' Don't Carry It All, set down the core tracks on a big, complex and fun as yet unnamed instrumental that Shawn wrote with Jeffrey Kolwitz many years ago, and added more layers to Ferry Me Over (which you heard an early version of on the Kickstarter video).

We also asked Sacha to take some group photos for us, which you'll likely see more of in the near future.  Here's one:
Picture
The summer will be filled with overdubs, mixing, album art, and the myriad of details that lay behind what can be seen and heard on the album, but hopefully we will also get some time to just play together in preparation for a late fall CD release party!  Last Sunday we dusted off a few pieces from the first album in preparation for that (Alex and Jason got introduced to Tamberling and My Johnny Was a Shoemaker), which was great fun.  We'll get you the date for the event (and for when you'll get your CDs and other gifts) as soon as we have it, and keep you posted along the way.

Thanks as always for your support in this process. We are very much looking forward to sharing the new music with you!

Another Fun and Successful Recording session!

We spent last weekend at Supernatural Sound getting the next phase of the recording process done.  Saturday we focused on vocal parts.  First up was adding the first round of four-part vocals to the basic tracks for Mouth Music, which was great fun! We had David, Vera and Anna in that round, along with Tom George, who's fine baritone voice we are borrowing for this piece. The second half of the day was spent with Anna layering several harmony parts for Ferry Me Over atop her lead. We still have a couple of instrumental overdubs to do, but the magic is definitely coming together there.
On Sunday, we laid down almost all of the tracks for a new tune set made up of Shawn's "The Dusty Crow" and Rachel's "Francie and the Birds" (dubbed by all "The Bird Set"). We also did overdubs for several other tunes, bringing us to what I think is probably the 2/3rd point of the in-studio section of the recording process!
We have another recording weekend set up in early April, and I'll get you another update then. Thanks again for your generous support of this project; we could not do this without you!

The Kickstarter was a success!

171 backers pledged $14,065 in support of our new CD, Rising.  We are enormously grateful to all of you who pledged, shared the announcement with your networks, and supported us in so many ways as we moved through this process.

You can look for Rising to be completed toward the end of 2016.  In the meanwhile, we'll keep updating the Rising page with photos, links to videos, etc. as the recording process moves forward.

Kickstarter Update: Six days to go! - Take a listen to what we're creating!

We've just about half way with six days to go!

Help us finish the Kickstarter campaign successfully!

Picture
We just got our 100th backer! We are so grateful for all the people who are excited about this project and giving what they can to make it happen!
Together, those 100 folks have pledged $6,726 of our $14,000 goal. It's exciting to watch the numbers keep building and, with only six days to go, we have a lot of work yet to do to get to our goal.
A fair number of pledges are coming from folks who are being introduced to us by Kickstarter, and they are more likely to pledge to a project that is getting close to funded, so if you are intending to pledge, please jump in now and help us create that sense of "we can do it!"
You will find the Kickstarter page here.

Sneak Preview: listen to what we're creating

Picture
We thought you might like a sneak preview of what we've been creating in the studio, so here is a link to the page on our website where you can hear the the bare bones of Ferry Me Over, a piece we've not yet performed live. We'll be making a few changes, and adding harmony vocals and a few other things before we call it done, but this will give you a taste of Timothy Hull's haunting, tender song of passage.

Please Spread the Word

f you have friends who you think would love the music we are making, encourage them to help make it happen by supporting our Kickstarter campaign.
You can also go to our Facebook page and share our Kickstarter announcement with your Facebook network.
If you have questions about any of this, please contact us.

Lyrics to the title song of our new album - Rising!

10/24/2015

We are excited to get back into to the studio next weekend to do some more recording. In addition, we are launching our Kickstarter campaign today. Here is a little taste of the new album - the lyrics to the title song.

Rising

Music by Vera Alcorn and Shawn Orpinela.  Lyrics by Tasha Harmon and Shawn Orpinela.
Woven words of silk and glass, promises and longings,
holding hearts and voices fast, parted by the waters.
I walk this place by scent and sound, dark or light, lost and found,
worn to grooves by eye and mouth, now’s the time to fly.

I am rising, rising with the tide.
I am rising, rising with the tide.
I am rising, rising with the tide.
I am rising, rising with the tide.
On the water I will ride.
I am rising.

Orange bleeding sky and hill, reflected in the water,
darkness bringing what it will – I won’t be here for dawn.
Decking shifts beneath my feet, gravity uncertain;
when this journey ends complete, I don’t know what I’ll be.

I am leaving, leaving with the tide.
I am leaving, leaving with the tide.
I am leaving, leaving with the tide.
On the water I will ride.
I am leaving.

Green-grey ocean, wide sky breaking through
Green-grey ocean, all is old, all is new.

Woven words of silk and glass, promises and longings,
holding hearts and voices…
Wind and water reach for sky, only clouds to shadow.
Sails that hum a lullaby, steering for a song.

I am sailing, sailing with the tide.
I am sailing, sailing with the tide.
I am sailing, sailing with the tide.
On the water I will ride.

I am rising, rising with the tide.
I am rising, rising with the tide.
I am rising, rising with the tide.
I am rising, rising with the tide.
On the water I will ride.

I am rising.
I am rising.
I am rising.

We are underway recording our second CD, Rising, and we will soon be inviting you to join us in bringing it to life!

As many of you already know, our band, Kendálin, headed into the studio this past summer to start recording our second CD. We are very excited to be getting some of the music we've been working on for the last couple of years recorded so we can share it with the larger world.
The catalyst for starting this recording project now was a long-time fan who came to us and offered to help fund the undertaking. His generous donation will cover about a third of the cost of the project. With that spark, we got inspired to consider how we might put together enough money to get this done, and we realized that there were likely lots of people out there who would be willing to support this undertaking.

So, we are launching a Kickstarter campaign

Picture
We've thought up some fun gifts we can offer in exchange for donations - the CD (signed or not) and download cards, of course, but also the lyrics to the title song from Rising hand-written and suitable for framing, a chance to sit in on a rehearsal, a Kendálin-themed tote bag (with art created by Alex Atallah), a house concert in your home (local folks only), and others. We hope you'll be excited to be part of the project, and to invite others who you think will love this music to join in and help make it happen.
In about two weeks, we will send you an email announcing that the Kickstarter is up and running and inviting you to give.

Prefer to make a donation direct to us?

Picture
If for any reason you would prefer to make a donation outside the Kickstarter process/platform, please let us know. We are happy to offer you the same gifts in return that we will be offering via kickstarter (and it will save us the fees associated with kickstarter).
It would be especially helpful to know if you want to do that before we launch the campaign, so we can adjust our goal to reflect your donation.
You can reach us, as always, at Tasha@Kendalin.com, or by phone at 503-788-2333.
